Martin Scorsese is to make a film documentary about late The Beatles legend George Harrison. The 'Gangs of New York' director wants to explore the extra-ordinary life of the rock icon after being inspired by Harrison's constant "search for spiritual meaning".
Scorsese said: "George Harrison's music and his search for spiritual meaning is a story that still resonates today and I'm looking forward to delving deeper."
The film will be co-produced by Harrison's widow Olivia. She said: "It would have given George great joy to know that Martin Scorsese has agreed to tell his story."
Harrison died in 2001, aged 58, after battling lung cancer and a brain tumour. The film, which is yet to be given a title, will cover Harrison's time with the Beatles, as well as his successful solo career and later involvement in the movie industry.
Harrison was a major investor in Handmade Films, the production company responsible for Monty Python's 'Life of Brian' in 1979. Scorsese will have access to Harrison's family archives, and is expected to touch on his fascination with Eastern spiritualism. Interviews and early production for the film will begin next year.
Meanwhile, surviving Beatles Ringo Starr and Sir Paul McCartney will play separate dates in Liverpool to celebrate their home city being named European Capital of Culture next year. Starr will open the new Liverpool Arena with Eurythmics guitarist Dave Stewart on January 12, while McCartney will headline The Liverpool Sound Concert at Anfield stadium on June 1. McCartney, Harrison, Starr and John Lennon were all born and brought up in Liverpool.
