Facing charges of endangering minor and second-degree harassment, Akon said that he is not guilty as charged. On Monday (03.12.07) morning, when the hip-hop singer appeared before court in the Dutchess County town of Fishkill, New York, he defended himself stating that he never meant to hurt anyone.
His attorney, Benjamin Brafman released a statement made by Akon stating, "It was never Akon's intention to violate the law. This unfortunate incident was a spontaneous reaction during a live concert that Akon deeply regrets."
It was reported that the 34-year-old singer showed up in the court earlier than the planned 9 a.m. schedule driving a black Cadillac Escalade SUV. Following his court appearance, Akon was released on that same day without bail. And, though he is expected to return to court on January 16, the prosecutors have stated that the singer was not forced to be present as he could be represented only by his lawyer.
Last August, to allhiphop.com, the 34-year-old singer commented the June concert incident, in which he threw a 15-year-old off-stage, saying, "People know me for doing crazy things, but even this kind of thing, I'm going to cut out in the future as people are taking it in a negative way and taking it seriously."
