Michael Vick Jailed for Illegal Dogfighting ChargesFinally pleaded guilty for his involvement in illegal dogfighting operation in rural Virginia, was sentenced to jail. On Monday (10.12.07), the suspended Atlanta Falcons' quarterback was penalized with 23 months of jail time and three years probation by U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson.

Explaining why he gave the harsh punishment, Hudson said, "You are instrumental in promoting, funding, and facilitating this cruel and inhumane sporting activity and I am convinced it was not a momentary lapse in judgment. You were a full partner." The judge also fined the 27-year-old former NFL star with 5,000 dollars amends.

Responding to Hudson's order to apologize to the millions of young people, Vick, who wore the black-and-white prison uniform when attending the court session, said softly, 'I'm willing to deal with the consequences and accept responsibility for my actions. I would like to apologise to the court, to my family, to my kids, for what I have done."

Following the reports of his sentence, the owner of Atlanta Falcons, Arthur Blank stated, "This is a difficult day for Michael's family and for a lot of us, including many of our players and fans who have emotionally invested in Michael over the years. We sincerely hope that Michael will use this time to continue to focus his efforts on making positive changes in his life, and we wish him well in that regard."

On July 17, 2007, it was reported that Vick was convicted for charges related to illegal dogfighting, including competitive dogfighting, procuring and training pit bulls for fighting, and conducting the enterprise. At first, the quarterback pleaded not guilty as charged. But, after being suspended from the NFL and being dropped by Nike, Vick admitted that he was involved in the illegal dogfighting business on August 27.
