R. Kelly's "Double Up" tour,
Ne-Yo has taken a legal action by placing a lawsuit against the tour's promoter, Rowe Entertainment, on Monday, December 31, 2007 in Los Angeles.
The R&B singer/songwriter alleged the promoter for breach of contract, violation of the right of publicity, and unfair business practices for his removal from the tour after only two gigs. The music star, whose real name is Shaffer Smith, is further demanding he be paid even though he didn't perform the whole tour - in excess of $735,000.
In his suit, Ne-Yo claimed to be promised a fee of $785,000 in the form of an oral agreement for his performances in the tour. The guarantee of such amount was based on an agreement to open up a minimum of 25 concerts, starting from November 14, 2007.
"The parties understood that the oral agreement was binding and would be binding even if a formal written agreement was never executed," the lawsuit reads.
Kelly's tour, which is scheduled to run through mid-January 2008, previously experienced a setback last month when a Chicago judge ruled that the January 13 gig in Hampton, Virginia should be canceled so the singer won't miss his next court date on January 14, 2008 dealing with his child-pornography case.
