It is a truly happy ending for Avril Lavigne. The Canadian pop star is reported to have settled a lawsuit placed against her by 1970s rock band The Rubinoos accusing her hit song "Girlfriend" was a work of plagiarism.
The troupe's lawyer Nicholas Carlin has announced that a settlement has been reached between the two sides through a confidential agreement. Exact financial details, however, have not yet been made public.
The Rubinoos previously alleged Lavigne's 2007 single sounded similar to their 1979 song "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend", believing it borrowed too heavily from their track and its chorus, "Hey, hey, you, you, I wanna be your boyfriend."
Lavigne, on the other hand, insisted she had never heard the band's single while a musicologist consulted by her legal team stated that no similarities are found between the songs. Lavigne's manager Terry McBride, however, concluded he would rather settle the matter out of court as a way of avoiding a costly legal.
