The star won best actor in musical title for his performance in "Sweeney Todd."
Nominated for seven times at Golden Globe Awards in his acting career so far,
Johnny Depp finally marked a victory in his eighth. The versatile thespian triumphantly took home the best actor in musical prize at the press conference for the prestigious awards event held on Sunday, January 13, 2008.
Depp was named so through his role as the titular vengeance-seeking barber in Tim Burton's acclaimed musical thriller "
Sweeney Todd." He beat out fellow competitors
Ryan Gosling,
Tom Hanks, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and John C. Reilly for the title.
Meanwhile, his starring vehicle was also deemed best comedy or musical flick at this 65th edition whereas "
Atonement" being selected the best drama feature. Other winning names in the film categories included
Javier Bardem,
Cate Blanchett, and French beauty
Marion Cotillard with
Jeremy Piven and Samantha Morton both landing acting honors in TV slots.
