Continues his charity work,
Elton John has made donation of 120 motorcycles to the African nation of Lesotho as part of the "Riders for Health" program, which he funds through his Elton John Aids Foundation.
The donation is to provide doctors and nurses with vehicles so that they can treat medical emergencies in the mountainous state, known to lie entirely above 3,300 feet in elevation.
The singer/composer himself was the one handing over the bikes in a ceremony held just outside of the country's capital city Maseru on Saturday, January 19, 2008.
"We want to improve the transport system by bringing health care to millions of people living in the most rural areas and thus making a difference in their lives," he stated to local reporters.
Meanwhile, Lesotho's Health Ministry spokesman Tumisang Mokoai remarked, "The nurses and doctors will have transport to follow up patients in the villages to support community health workers. The motorcycles will be distributed to all health centres in Lesotho."
