Trouble seems to follow rapper Lil Wayne as he got arrested early on Wednesday, January 23, 2007 after federal agents found illegal drugs on his charter bus at a California-Arizona border checkpoint. Two other passengers on the bus, Curtis Stewart and Harold Johnson, were also under arrest for marijuana possession, Yuma County Sheriff's spokesman Capt. Eben Bratcher revealed.
Wayne, real name Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., spent the day at the Yuma County jail before being released on more than $10,000 bail. The 25-year-old, on the other hand, is facing three felony charges of possession of dangerous drugs, narcotics and drug paraphernalia.
A local lawyer retained by Wayne, James Tilson, however, stated that the charges were not the formal ones and that his client's next court date was scheduled this Friday, January 25, 2008.
"We will find out by Jan. 25 whether or not the (Yuma) county attorney will file charges or not," Tilson said. "He is looking forward to his day in court. That's all I can say right now."
According to Bratcher, Wayne had his bus stopped about 11:30 P.M. Tuesday (Jan. 22) at a Border Patrol checkpoint near Dateland, Arizona, 78 miles east of Yuma. DEA agents alerted by a Border Patrol dog then made a search on the vehicle which yielded 105 grams (3.7 ounces) of marijuana, 29 grams (1 ounce) of cocaine, and 41 grams (1.45 ounces) of ecstasy.
Also found during the inspection was a .40 caliber pistol registered to Wayne in Florida.
Authorities are currently checking to determine whether the Hip-hop MC violated any weapons laws in Arizona, Ramona Sanchez, a spokeswoman for DEA in Phoenix, said.
