Mel Gibson could breathe free from his probation stemming from 2006 DUI case, almost. The actor stepped in for the last time in a Malibu court and declared by the judge to have met the preliminary terms of his no-contest plea to misdemeanor drunken driving but will remain in probation for another 18 months.
Gibson had completed five AA meetings per week over five months, attended the compulsory 90-day DUI program and paid $1,600 fine. His three-years probation is still half served but the judge has complimented the actor for doing it well. "I believe you are committed to this rehabilitation," said Malibu Superior Court Judge Lawrence Mira who was replied with "yes".
"You're on your own now with the self-help groups, so this is the most difficult time for you," Mira continued. "Good luck to you as you continue on your rehabilitation." Gibson muttered a "thank you" before leaving the room through a back door. He managed to wave at the TV crews and photographers who were crowding the front door of the court.
"The Passion of The Christ" director was caught driving too fast on Pacific Coast Highway in July 2006 and went berserk when arrested. He unleashed a torrent of sexist and anti-semitic language against deputies which one of them is a Jewish. In later court date, Gibson had apologized to these remarks and pleaded no contest.
