Although chatters about his sexual orientation have been around for sometime and people have been kind of predicting this, Michael Stipe is eventually letting out the official statement from his own lips. The R.E.M. frontman has come out of the closet admitting that he is indeed gay, saying that it could only be revealed now for a reason.
The 48-year-old singer believed that during his youth, it was hard to admit such thing. However, he now realizes that with him coming out, he will help a lot of kids in his situation. "I recognize that to have public figures be very open about their sexuality helps some kid somewhere out there," he told Spin magazine.
He added that he "didn't always see" how coming out could help others. "But I see now, of course, that's the case," he added. "I'd just never felt strongly enough about a particular relationship to say, 'Yeah, he's my boyfriend, that is what it is.'" Stipe also said that it was "super complicated" for him in the '80s but he never tried to shade the fact from "the band and my family and my friends and certainly the people I was sleeping with. I thought it was pretty obvious."
One thing that people may never realize before that indicates his sexual orientation would be the song "7 Chinese Brothers" the he wrote. "The song '7 Chinese Brothers' was about me breaking up a couple and then dating both of them - a man and a woman - which is a terrible thing to do," he revealed. "But I was young and stupid."
