A representative for Madonna has blasted British newspaper reports that the pop diva is is set to adopt a three-year-old girl from poverty-stricken Malawi, Mercy James. "Madonna has not made an attempt to adopt this baby earlier this year or now," the singer's longtime rep Liz Rosenberg said in a statement.
Aside from denying adoption rumors, the rep also slammed the reports claiming Madonna's tour is canceled. Rosenberg revealed that the "Like a Virgin" songstress is going to start her tour in a week. "There is no truth to this rumor. It's an old one - wasn't true then or now. Madonna is starting her tour in a week," she said.
The Sun previously reported that Madonna had been pursuing Mercy for a year. But when her marriage to Guy Ritchie was on the rock, she stopped proceedings. "Madonna's representatives have been visiting the girl. The adoption is now advanced - all the government is waiting for is Madonna to forward the petition of adoption formalities," Malawi's adoption minister Penstone Kilembe said.
The singer, who turns 50 on Saturday, August 16, was said to "fall in love" with the Malawian girl after she met her in an orphanage last year. It's also reported that Malawian officials have approved the adoption last August, but the proceedings was stopped after the girls' uncle, John Nglanade, blocked the adoption.
Madonna previously adopted a Malawian child, David Banda. Her adoption has been approved by the country's courts in May after a two-year battle. There's no family strife in this adoption. "I gave Madonna 100 percent rights for my son. He is her son. It's because of her benovent nature that he assured me she will not cut ties with me," David's dad, Yohane Banda, told Us Weekly earlier this week.
