British soccer ace David Beckham may be not joining U.K. national team in the Beijing Olympics. But it doesn't mean that he won't there. It has been confirmed that Beckham is set to take part in the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympics on Sunday, August 24.
"David is going to be in the surprise finale. They always have a segment to do the handover, to showcase the next city to host the Olympics," a source told People magazine. The closing ceremony will take place at the Beijing National Stadium. It's scheduled to begin at 08:00 P.M. China Standard Time (UTC+8).
"He was very involved in the London bid to get it, and as a Londoner he is incredibly proud that the Olympics will be in London. He is passionate about it and looking forward to the games in 2012," the source quoted as saying. "If his (calendar) works out, he will be able to go from the L.A. Galaxy game to Beijing. It also depends on if he gets picked for the next England game, as he can go on from there," the source added.
Moreover, the closing ceremony will also include the handover of the games from Beijing to London. Mayor of Beijing, Guo Jinlong, will hand over the Olympic flag to Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London. The London Organizing committee for the Olympic Games will have a performance as well as British singer Leona Lewis, who is also set to perform at the closing ceremony.
