'Calm down, no one died, it's all right,' says Russell Brand when defending Kanye West, who has interrupted Taylor Swift's acceptance speech during 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.
Different from lots of celebrities who have slammed
Kanye West for interrupting
Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, the show's host
Russell Brand opted to defend the rapper's behavior. "We're all people; these things are a bit silly. Calm down, no one died, it's all right," the famous comedian said during the "On Air With
Ryan Seacrest" radio show on Monday, September 14.
Later, Brand claimed he considered West "a little bit excited" when Swift won Best Female Video gong and beat top-notch songstress
Beyonce Knowles. "In the past, I've made mistakes and done things a little bit daft, if I think someone has done things that I don't agree with, I think, well, I've done things in the past that I'm not proud of," he recalled.
"I know Kanye, and I know he's a nice bloke. We all make mistakes in life," Brand continued, before mentioning that the 32-year-old singer actually had picked a wrong person to target. "Taylor Swift's a young kid, isn't she? Yeah, you can't make a pretty girl cry."
During 26th Annual MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, September 13, Kanye West was videotaped rushing to the stage and grabbing microphone from Taylor Swift's hands when she gave an acceptance speech for her Best Female Video award. "Yo Taylor. I'm really happy for you. I'm gonna let you finish but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time," West said when referring to Beyonce Knowles' "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" music video. "One of the best videos of all time!"
After the show, the rapper apologized to Swift, writing in his blog "I'm sooooo sorry to Taylor Swift and her fans and her mom." Then, the next day, he wrote a new apology in his blog after removing the previous post, stating "I feel like
Ben Stiller in 'Meet the Parents' when he messed up everything and
Robert De Niro asked him to leave ... That was Taylor's moment and I had no right in any way to take it from her. I am truly sorry."
