Stephen Gately has passed away at the age of 33 when vacationing along with his gay partner Andrew Cowles in Majorca, Spain.
Stephen Gately, a member of Irish boy band Boyzone, passed away while vacationing in Spain. According to a statement which was posted in the band's website on Sunday, October 11, the 33-year-old singer "tragically died yesterday whilst on holiday with his partner Andrew [Cowles] in Majorca."
As of the press time, the reason of Stephen's dead is still unclear. However, there is speculation that he died after enjoying a night outing along with Andrew. Then, Gerald Kean, Stephen's family friend, claimed the singer passed away because of natural causes.
"There's no foul play involved, and it's not suicide. It's just a tragic accident is what we've been told, and we're happy that that is correct information," Gerald said. "There is nothing untoward. It's not drugs, we don't believe. It's not suicide. It's not murder. It's not a fight. That's what we've been told." An autopsy to Stephen's body is scheduled to be conducted on Tuesday, October 13.
Back in 1999, Stephen Gately surprised the music industry after announcing that he was a gay. About five years later, he held a commitment ceremony with his longtime partner Andrew Cowles in a wedding chapel whilst on holiday in Las Vegas. Then, on March 19, 2006, both of them formalized their commitment with a civil ceremony in London.
