The former boxing champion was detained by the police after allegedly hitting a celebrity photographer at Los Angeles International Airport.
Mike Tyson has found himself in hot water. On Wednesday, November 11, the former heavyweight boxing champion was arrested as a result of an altercation he had with a celebrity photographer at Los Angeles International Airport. According to police records, he was booked at a nearby LAPD station and held on $20,000 bail, before being released later on.
Tyson reportedly told the police that the unnamed photographer struck him in an attempt to provoke him. The photographer, in the meantime, insisted that Tyson punched him in the face and tried to take film from his camera. During the shuffle, Los Angeles Airport Police Sergeant Jim Holcomb said the photographer fell to the ground and sustained "a laceration to the forehead" after receiving a blow from Tyson.
Of the incident, Los Angeles Airport Police Sergeant Jim Holcomb said, "There's a lot of different versions to the story. Some witness statements support Tyson's version, others support the photographer's." He added, "That's all going to come out later. But in this particular case, both individuals are going to be pressing charges for battery." The unnamed photographer who had been taken to a local hospital to treat his cut was also arrested.
The altercation took place as the 43-year-old Tyson was passing through LAX from Europe en route to Las Vegas. According to his spokeswoman Tammy Brook, he was traveling with his wife and 10-month-old child when the photographer began taking his picture at the United Airlines terminal. His rep further noted that the former boxer acted in self-defense to protect his child.
