Beating younger stars like Robert Pattinson and Adam Lambert, the Jack Sparrow of 'Pirates of the Caribbean' joins George Clooney and Brad Pitt in the elite club of double honorees.
Johnny Depp has been crowned by People magazine as its "Sexiest Man Alive" for the second time. On Wednesday, November 18, it was unraveled that the Captain Jack Sparrow of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series joined the elite club of two-time "Sexiest Man Alive" title holders, which includes
George Clooney and
Brad Pitt.
The 46-year-old first scored the honor in 2003. This year, he took over the title from 2008's "Sexiest Man Alive"
Hugh Jackman and beat out younger front runners such as season 8 runner-up of "American Idol"
Adam Lambert and "Twilight Saga" heartthrob
Robert Pattinson, who landed on the tenth and fifteenth on the list respectively.
"He was sexy ten years ago, he'll be sexy ten years from now," People senior editor Kate Coyne explained to the CBS Early Show why they chose the actor to hold this year's title. "He appeals to multiple generations of women - and for many different reasons to different kinds of women."
Coyne also noted that although the actor has been swooning women since his days as a teen detective on "21 Jump Street", he remained devoted to his family which makes him more appealing. "He's sort of everything," she said. "He's a guy's guy, kind of a bad boy, he's a respected artist and actor. You know, he's got a little bit of everything."
Johnny Depp was recently seen starring as murderous barber in "
Sweeney Todd" and legendary Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger in "
Public Enemies". He will be seen as Tony in "
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus". His next big screen project will be the March 2010-released "
Alice in Wonderland", in which he takes on the role of the Mad Hatter.
The top ten of People's 2009 "Sexiest Man Alive" itself includes the likes of actors
Ryan Reynolds,
Jake Gyllenhaal,
Bradley Cooper,
Robert Downey Jr. and
Gilles Marini. Soccer superstar
David Beckham and "America's Got Talent" host
Nick Cannon also makes the list.
