'I wanted to kill myself. I could very easily not be the person who's sitting here right now,' the Linkin Park's frontman reveals to have considered ending his life after splitting from his wife.
Chester Bennington once considered to commit suicide because he was so wretched after his first marriage ended. Following his split from his wife Samantha, who is also the mother of his 7-year-old son Draven, the vocalist of
Linkin Park admitted to use alcohol and drugs as a way to escape from his deep grief.
The 33-year-old singer shared to Britain's Kerrang on what made him so devastated. He said, "Leaving my wife was the easy part - the difficult part was losing all my money, starting my life over and having to pay the person I didn't want to be around in the first place."
"I felt like my life's work had been given away. I drank myself to the point where I couldn't leave the house and I couldn't function," he continued. "I wanted to kill myself. I could very easily not be the person who's sitting here right now. I could be dead. It was a horrible, horrible existence."
Although he used to be in a broken state, Chester has been alcohol-free for four years after going through several stints in rehab. However, he confessed he is still haunted by several issues, saying "There are still things I struggle with. I don't like being an alcoholic. [It's] my biggest enemy."
Personal life aside, Chester Bennington just released a side project with Dead by Sunrise called "Out of Ashes" on October 13 worldwide. This album is darker compared to Linkin Park's records. Chester described it as "a good rock that's a bit grungy and dirty, but at the same time, it's still clean and poppy in places."
