The 39-year-old beauty will receive Breakthrough Performance Award at next year's Palm Spring International Festival Awards for her role in 'Precious: Based on the Novel PUSH by Sapphire'.
Mariah Carey finally proved her acting skills as she is about to be awarded with Breakthrough Performance Award at the 21st Annual Palm Spring International Festival Awards. The five-time Grammy winner will receive the award for her performance in "
Precious: Based on the Novel PUSH by Sapphire" at the gala which will be held on January 5 at Palm Spring Convention Center.
"We're delighted to be able to present the Breakthrough Performance Award to the extraordinary, very beautiful and versatile Mariah Carey," Harold Matzner, the Festival chairman, told Entertainment Tonight. "[Mariah] critically acclaimed role, completely transformed herself from a glamorous music icon to a forthright social worker for the role of Ms. Weiss in Precious."
Previous recipients for the awards included
Jennifer Hudson,
Marion Cotillard and
Freida Pinto. Jennifer, Marion and Freida won the Breakthrough Awards for "
Dreamgirls" in 2006, "
La Vie en Rose" in 2007 and "
Slumdog Millionaire" in 2008 respectively.
Mariah Carey portrays a social worker named Mrs. Weiss in "Precious". The film, which was adapted from novel "Push" by Sapphire, follows an overweight illiterate teen Claireece "Precious" Jones. Pregnant with her second child, 16-year-old Precious is enrolled in an alternative school and against all odds breaks from the chains of ignorance. The big screen project has been screened in limited U.S. theater since November 6.
Previously, Mariah has appeared in several movies, such as "WiseGirls", "State Property 2", and "
Tennessee". In 2001, she was awarded for Worst Actress at Golden Raspberry Awards for her role in "Glitter."
