Susan Boyle Breaks Record With Debut Album

Topping British album chart, the runner-up of 'Britain's Got Talent' third series makes U.K. chart history as her 'I Dreamed A Dream' effort becomes the country's best-selling debut.

Susan Boyle has got a sweet consolation for her "Britain's Got Talent" defeat as her debut album, "I Dreamed A Dream", smashed chart record. According to the Official Charts Company, her first set has become the largest first-week sales for a debut album in U.K. chart history with more than 410,000 copies of the effort being sold since its release on November 23.

Scoring the fastest selling album of 2009, the 48-year-old topped the chart and beat out competitions that include JLS, Black Eyed Peas and Michael Jackson. Her spokeswoman has stated that in the U.S., Boyle was outselling Rihanna, Lady Gaga and 50 Cent. The Scottish singer was also poised to break Eminem's record for highest first week US sales in 2009.

Before "I Dreamed A Dream" was made available in stores, it has made a history of its own. On November 19, Amazon.com revealed that the album has the largest number of pre-orders in the site's history. Executive Craig Pape said, "Looking at the rest of our global Top 5, you see titles that resonated in their local markets. Susan's album is clearly capturing the hearts of our customers around the globe."

Of her record breaking album, Boyle simply said in a statement released by her record company, "it's fantastic." Also commenting on Boyle's success was Martin Talbot, managing director of the Official Charts Company. Noting that the majority of buyers purchased the CD, he stated, "Everyone expected this to be a big record, but not as big as this."

Simon Cowell, one of the judges from "Britain's Got Talent", chimed in with a praise. "She did it her way and made a dream come true," he opened up. "In Britain's Got Talent she opened her mouth and the world fell in love with her, which is why her album has been the fastest selling of any woman making her debut."
