Nominated for their roles in two different films, both Hollywood actresses are head-to-head for the category of Best Actress in Drama as well as Best Supporting Actress.
Emily Blunt and
Penelope Cruz will be competing against each other for 2009 Satellite Awards. On Sunday, November 29, the International Press Academy announced the nominees for its 14th annual awards, unraveling that the two Hollywood big names are nominated in two same categories.
Blunt and Cruz are up for Best Actress in Drama and Best Supporting Actress. Blunt received the Best Actress nod for her performance as Queen Victoria in "
The Young Victoria", and Cruz got the nom for "
Broken Embraces". As for the supporting actress category, Blunt nailed it through her "
Sunshine Cleaning" performance, and Cruz nabbed it due to her role in "
Nine".
Cruz's upcoming musical "Nine", in the meantime, lands 11 nominations. It is on the run for Best Picture in Comedy or Musical, Best Director and Best Cinematography among others. Already winning the award for Best Ensemble from the Academy, the Rob Marshall-directed movie also includes two of its leading actors,
Daniel Day-Lewis and
Marion Cotillard, in Best Actor and Actress in Comedy or Musical.
In the TV category,
Lea Michele of "Glee",
Tina Fey of "30 Rock" and
Toni Collette of "United States of Tara" are among the contenders of Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical Series.
Alec Baldwin is up for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical Series, while Jon Hamm of "Mad Men" is listed among the contenders for Best Actor in a Drama Series.
Along with the announcement of 2009 nominees, the International Press Academy also unveiled its 10 best films of 2009. Among the movies listed are "Nine", "
Inglourious Basterds", "
Precious: Based on the Novel PUSH by Sapphire", "
An Education", "
The Hurt Locker" and "
Up in the Air".
The nominations of 14th Satellite Awards contain in 22 film categories, 12 TV categories, seven DVD categories and five video-game categories. The awards will be presented at the InterContinental Hotel in Los Angeles on December 20. The complete list of nominations can be seen at .
