Up in the Air" had planned to tie the knot with the actress/model.
Of the reason why Clooney finally made the decision, a source said, "Eli is George's match." The source added, "Elisabetta doesn't need George's money. She does quite well by herself, and she's not the type of woman to allow a man to pay for everything, so she insists on going Dutch."
"He loves that she's her own woman," the source further said of the twosome. "In fact, Eli said no when George wanted her to move to L.A. with him. She broke the news to George that she wants her own home. He offered to pay her rent - and she laughed."
George Clooney and Elisabetta Canalis made their debut appearance as a couple in September this year. At the time, the pair was allegedly snapped smooching and hugging at a helicopter when they were transported to Venice Film Festival.
