Accepting Breakthrough Performance kudo for her performance in 'Precious: Based on the Novel PUSH by Sapphire', the 40 year-old diva admitted to being a little drunk.
Pop diva Mariah Carey unintentionally made a fool of herself when delivering her acceptance speech at Palm Springs International Film Festival awards on January 5. Receiving Breakthrough Performance award for her performance in "Precious: Based on the Novel PUSH by Sapphire", the wife of Nick Cannon puzzled the audience by showing tipsy behavior once she was on stage.
Carey's disoriented acts began with a bizarre opening sentence when she received her award. "Oh my goodness! I don't think they understand the kitten in cotton thing. No we don't. Ok, I love you," she rambled. Soon afterwards, she started to giggle before stumbling through her words again. After a short pause, she finally hinted the audience that she was quite wasted. "I have to say this is - and please forgive me because I"m a little bit um...yeah. Oh my goodness..."
Presenting Carey the award on Tuesday night was "Precious" director, Lee Daniels. In defense to Carey's bizarre behavior at the gala ceremony, the 50-year-old filmmaker and also a close friend to the songstress told News Channel 3 that the pop-star-turned-actress had too much champagne that night and didn't eat anything. "The champagne went to her head," he added.
In "Precious", Mariah Carey plays a social worker named Mrs. Weiss. Her character meets with Gabourey Sidibe's Claireece "Precious" Jones, a 16-year-old girl who suffers long term physical, mental and sexual abuse from her parents. In addition to this Palm Springs International Film Festival award, she also has received Supporting Actress of the Year kudo from Capri Award for the part.
