Director Guillermo del Toro has slammed down flying rumors suggesting that the 'Spider-Man' actor has been cast in the lead role of the J.R.R. Tolkien's adaptation.
Tobey Maguire will not play Bilbo Baggins in "The Hobbit". As soon as the false casting story were making its rounds, Ain't It Cool News came out with the debunking report by posting producer Peter Jackson's statement. "No truth at all, although we're all big fans of Toby. We are currently auditioning for Bilbo, and a month or two away from any announcements," so his e-mail read.
The site, in addition, let out an e-mail response from director Guillermo del Toro himself, who simply wrote "Its not true, gordito-". Sounding off similar denial to the story was The One Ring. It claimed to have del Toro popping up on its message boards to re-affirm that the star of "
Spider-Man" series is not taking the lead part.
The story that Tobey Maguire has come on board to play Bilbo Baggins has been brought up by The Sun, which claimed that the 34-year-old actor signed up to the J.R.R. Tolkien's adaptation after he quit "Spider-Man" series. A source added, "The Hobbit team are deep in the casting process. Everyone is over the moon. Tobey is not only one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood, he is also one of the best actors."
It is not the first time the "
Seabiscuit" actor has been linked to the Bilbo Baggins part. Back in December 2009, his publicist Kelly Bush was forced to come out with a denial that he is in talks for the role after Latino Review reported that the actor said during a press junket for "
Brothers", he would work with Guillermo del Toro for his next project.
