Stopping by 'The Oprah Winfey Show' on January 20, the Barbadian singer explained she chose the Bob Marley song because 'it was so liberating' and the Haitian 'need to hear something inspiring'.
Rihanna has come to "The Oprah Winfrey Show" on Wednesday, January 20 in support of Haiti. Taking the talk show's floor, the 21-year-old belted out "Redemption Song", the Bob Marley's song she especially re-recorded to raise funds for the earthquake victims in the Caribbean country.
In the beginning of her performance, the "Russian Roulette" singer delivered the tune accompanied by the sound of an acoustic guitar and an organ. As she poured her heart out through the song while host Oprah Winfrey and fellow guest Wyclef Jean watched from the sidelines, photos from the devastation in the island took over on a backdrop behind her.
The former girlfriend of Chris Brown later on revealed why she chose to cover the classic tune. "This song for me, growing up, anytime there was a difficult situation, I always listened to this song because it was so liberating," she exlained. "Even now I listen to it when my back is up against the wall. I feel like the people of Haiti need to hear something inspiring."
Before her performance, the Barbadian singer pleaded for donations saying, "Everybody needs to tune in. We need your help. Don't depend on it to get done. Don't assume it's going to get done - it's only going to get done if we help." Her "Redemption Song" cover has been made available for purchase on iTunes, RihannaNow.com and Oprah.com. All proceeds will go to Haitian relief efforts.
