Confessing that she has 'lived with this character' whom she has loved from day one and has 'only grown to feel more connected to her', the Betty Suarez depicter reveals 'it's hard to say goodbye'.
Having taken on the role of Betty Suarez on "Ugly Betty" for four years has made it difficult for
America Ferrera to say goodbye to the ABC's hit series, which series finale is set to air on April 14. In a recent interview with Parade magazine, the 25-year-old actress confessed that she is "in denial for now."
"I've lived with this character who I've loved from day one and I have only grown to feel more connected to her and also responsible for making sure her journey is a complete one," she said of her character. "Her entire journey was about a transformation, kind of coming into her womanhood and owning herself both physically and emotionally. It's hard to say goodbye."
"I haven't really started going there yet because I still have four episodes to shoot," Ferrera further added. "So I'm staying in denial for now and I'll deal with all those emotions in a little bit. I imagine that when we finally wrap it's not going to be a dry-eyed goodbye." Another reason why it is difficult to bid farewell, she revealed that her character has helped her growing "so much as a person".
"I never really pictured myself being on television. I couldn't imagine a world coming along that would entice me enough to sign away years and years of my life to one character," she revealed. "Then Betty came around. I was 21 when I started and I've learned so much and grown so much as a person. It has to be about believing in what you're doing."
ABC has drawn decision to pull the plug on "Ugly Betty" in late January. The series starring Ferrera will come to its conclusion in mid-April due to its episode order trimming from 22 to 20. "We've mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty's final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion," executive producer Silvio Horta and ABC president Steve McPherson revealed in a joint statement.
America Ferrera will next be seen in the upcoming movie "
Our Family Wedding". In addition, she will lend her voice in the 3-D animated film "
How To Train Your Dragon". Of the voice gig, she admitted that it was a dream come true because she "grew up obsessed with films like '
The Little Mermaid', '
Beauty and the Beast' and '
The Lion King'".
