Words are, after the Fox depicter in Timur Bekmambetov's 'Wanted' walks away from the sequel to concentrate on another project, Universal scraps the follow-up movie plan altogether.
After "
Wanted (2008)" generated much surprise with its box office performance, Universal Pictures was planning to follow it up with a sequel. However, New York magazine's Vulture blog has recently brought out a story suggesting that the studio has pulled the plug on "
Wanted 2" because of
Angelina Jolie.
Vulture mentioned that the studio made the decision after the actress who plays Fox in the first film dropped her involvement in the future movie to focus more on Alfonso Cuaron's space thriller "
Gravity". It was reported that movie bosses would rather cancel the sequel project altogether than replacing the 34-year-old with another actress.
[SPOILER ALERT!] Since Jolie's character died in the first film, the Academy Award-winning actress wasn't suppose to make a return. Still, it has been said earlier that the second movie will likely to see her character being resurrected. During a panel at San Diego Comic Con 2009, director Timur Bekmambetov teased, "James McAvoy will be in the movie, and he will try to wake up our Fox."
Should Universal continued on with its sequel plan, "Wanted 2" has Timur Bekmambetov attached to direct. "Wanted (2008)" star
James McAvoy will once again take the role of Wesley Gibson. The story allegedly will revolve around the international group of assassins from issues 4 and 5 of Mark Millar's graphic novel.
