Although his 'Nothin' to Lose' duet with the Disney star generated criticism for its 'slowly get undressed' lyrics, the 46-year-old rocker insists that there is nothing he has 'to be defensive about'.
Bret Michaels's new song featuring Miley Cyrus, "Nothing to Lose", has stirred controversy due to its "slowly get undressed" lyrics. While some think that it is inappropriate for a teen girl and a middle-aged man to sing the lyric together, the lead vocalist of Poison spoke about his reaction towards the criticism to Us Magazine.
"I was like, 'What the f*ck is going on?' Everyone's going nuts! It's blown out of proportion," the 46-year-old rocker expressed his what came across his mind. Explaining further, he recalled the time his teen collaborator heard the song, "[Miley's] like, 'This is an incredible song, it's beautiful. Maybe I could some stuff to it, some harmonies.' I said, 'That'd be killer!' "
Asked if Michaels noticed that the lyric sounds a bit inappropriate for a 17-year-old girl, he responded, "I never sat down and said, 'Look at the content. Look at the lyrical content.' " He then came out with a defense stating, "the part where it says she slowly gets undressed, Miley says, 'Yeah she does.' It has no reference to her and I. It's not even a duet."
"As God is my witness, there is nothing I have to be defensive about," Michaels further added. "I'm a good Dad. I just thought it was a beautiful song." He then pointed out that his relationship with the star of "Hannah Montana" is nothing but mutual friends. "Her first concert ever was Poison. Now I take my kids and they go see her play. It's awesome!" he said.
"Nothing to Lose" was written by Bret Michaels "a couple of years ago". He further explained that he had recorded it solo before. The idea of recording the song together with Miley Cyrus came out after the star of "Rock of Love with Bret Michaels" played it to Cyrus and her mother during a break while she was in the middle of remaking his classic "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" for her next album.
